What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Many people are unknowingly suffering from type 2 diabetes due to not knowing the symptoms. Often, diabetes is diagnosed when a blood or urine test is done for a different disease or problem.

You should go to the doctor as soon as the symptoms of diabetes appear. Certain factors increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In these cases you have to be careful if you are showing symptoms of diabetes or not.

What causes increased risk of type 2 diabetes ?

  1. If you are over 40 years old (over 25 years for South Asians).
  2. Any of your close relatives (eg father, mother, brother or sister) have diabetes.
  3. If you are obese or overweight.
  4. If you are of Asian, African-Caribbean or African descent (even if you were born in another country).

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Common symptoms include:

  1. Urinating more often than usual, especially at night
  2. Feeling thirsty all the time,

How to be sure if you have type 2 diabetes?

You can be sure of this in the following three steps:

  1. Consult a doctor about your symptoms.
  2. Your doctor will test your urine and blood to determine if you have high blood sugar.
  3. If diabetes is diagnosed, the doctor will explain the results in the report and tell you what to do now.
